Cup Crisis

Dugout Inter-Regional Cup 2nd Round
Culter 0 Elmwood 1, H-T 0-1 Scorer Leah 45 (pen)

For the second Saturday on the trot Culter were dumped out of a cup. This time they must consider themselves unlucky as they played some solid football with newcomer Gordon Farmer having a good debut, particularly in the first period. The Deesiders were without their main strike force of McRitchie and Cameron although the latter came on as a second half sub. Culter started on the offensive and Davidson broke into the box but he chose to cross instead of shooting and the chance was gone. In the 7t' minute Farmer went crashing in the box but referee Craig Sim waved away the appeals and a minute later Farmer sent in a whipping cross but there were no takers. Stewart was next to try his luck from a good Cowell ball but keeper Lindsay did well to block the shot. Moments later a mistake by Black of Elmwood let in Stewart and his cute lob beat the keeper but drifted just over. Adam then had a good effort saved by Lindsay from an Allan pass as
Culter piled on the pressure. With 18 minutes gone Elwood had their first opportunity but Stevenson blasted well over from distance before Sommerville volleyed well wide from outside the box. At the other end a super Ord ball found Stewart but Lindsay got down well to save the winger's attempt.

Farmer was having a field day on the left and his stinging grounder was held by the keeper before the same player smacked a cross cum shot against the post in 31 minutes. In a rare attack Elmwood were awarded a free kick which Black blasted into the wall. With a few minutes of the half remaining a long Rattray ball was superbly killed by Orawwho swivelled before sending in a: clipped shot which just cleared the bar and ended up on thex-roof of the net with Lindsay beaten. Disaster struck for Culter in the 45"' minute when a Watson shot from distance struck Rattray on the upper arm and the ref pointed to the spot. Despite the protestations the decision stood and LEAH stepped up to net. Culter had another chance in time added on but Cowell's blistering drive whistled over.

Culter started were they left off in the second period dominating possession without really getting much on target but they had keeper M. Pirie to thank when he turned a Leah shot out for a comer. Culter then sent on Cameron for Davidson in an attempt to get something from the game and their chances seemed to be enhanced when Duncan of Elwood was shown red for lashing out at Rattray. Cameron's introduction almost told when his snap shot from a Calder pass went agonisingly wide. The woodwork came to the rescue once again for the visitors when a Craik header from a Farmer comer crashed off the underside of the bar before being booted to safety by Watson. Culter kept pushing and had almost all the possession and a visionary shot from Ord from a seemingly impossible position shrieked past the upright. With time rapidly running out Cameron tried his luck with a lob but once again the chance went over before a great strike from Cowell was turned behind acrobatically by the keeper.

After the final whistle one of the Elwood supporters commented that "We were gubbed 0-1".
