Acorn Cup 1st
Round: Glentanar 0 Culter 2 H- T 0-1
Scorers:- McRitchie 43, Stewart 89
Culter progressed into the next round of the Acorn against a
stuffy and greetin' faced
Glentanar who were still bleetering on about the abandoned game
from earlier in the
season.
Much of the
early exchanges were pretty even until a powerful shot from
McAllister was diverted
behind for a
corner by Christie. M. Pirie was called into action for the 1 st
time in the 7th minute when he
held a Law shot
with consummate ease. The play then switched to the other end
when a flowing move involving Adam and Craik ended up with
McRitchie but his low strike was blocked and cleared to safety.
Moments later Culter won a corner but Thain headed Adam's flag
kick wide of the target. Culter were dominant at this stage but
in a breakaway Mars got free but Pirie took the deep cross well.
With 24 minutes gone Cameron spurted free but his speculative
effort from wide right was held by Riches. Tanar then had a
period of supremacy with their route one tactics but Rattray and
company weren't severely tested until Mars went clean through
but the looming figure of Pirie forced him to blaze well over.
Just before the interval the influential Adam sought out Calder
wide right and his deep cross found MCRITCHIE inside the area
and he somehow managed to head the ball into the roof of
the net with both the keeper and Raby in attendance.
Culter started fairly well at the beginning of the second half and
Collie found McRitchie free but his cross was hacked away out of
the danger area. Moments later the petulant Pirie of 'Tanar
found Mars but not for the first time the former Culter wide man
saw his cross drift behind. The Deesiders then put together a
move of real quality with good interpassing play involving .Adam
and Calder which saw a relieved A. Campbell put the ball behind
for a comer. Adam took the kick and found the head of McRitchie
but his potent header was cleared of the line by Ross and
Rattray looking for the rebound fired his effort just over.
McRitchie had another prospect from a decent Cameron ball but
the ball bobbled on the poor surface at the vital moment and he
scooped just wide. Greig, back in the side following injury and
possibly due the suspension of Allan, was having a decent game
but a wayward header was picked up by Mars and his deep cross
was dealt with superbly by Pirie. Midway through the half a good
headed clearance by Greig was picked up by McRitchie who fed
Cameron and he slotted the ball through to Craik but he shot
wide from good position. 'Tanar were becoming frustrated
by now and Pirie threatened to leave the field after being
barracked by his own committee but he saw sense and returned to
the fray. With 25 minutes of the period gone 'Tanar sent on long
throw man S. Campbell for Ross and Culter put Stewart into the
action for Cameron. Christie went on a long run deep into enemy
territory but was unceremoniously elbowed off the ball by A.
Campbell who was lucky to escape with a ticking off by referee
D. Taylor. With the clock running down 'Tanar threw all they had
at Culter but the visitors were in no mood to capitulate and
they secured the tie with half a minute to go of normal time
with arguably the goal of the season. McRitchie was given the
ball near the half way line and he picked out the scurrying
STEWART who barely took a touch before lifting the ball
delicately over Riches from well out and after what seemed like
an age the ball found the back of the net. In the final seconds
Edene came on for McRitchie but by this time the tie was won
much to the chagrin of the small home support and 'Tanar
players. |
