Culter climbed in to top equal place in the Super League following a strange
game at Glenury Park. The Deesiders were two up within 2 minutes then sat
back and ‘Hive will consider themselves unfortunate not to get something
from the game.
Culter started like a house on fire and were one up in the opening minute.
Allan Youngson picked out Andy Sim galloping down the right and his pin
point cross was flashed home by the onrushing Ryan Stott. With the large
crowd still arriving Culter went two up in the very next attack when Matt
Robertson released Allan Youngson deep in the area and he curled a beauty
past the bemused Mike Smith in the Stoney goal. A minute later Ryan Stott
set Lewis McKimmie free but the speedy attacker blasted well over. With ten
minutes on the clock Culter should have been on easy street when Lewis
McKimmie found Allan Youngson but he blasted the ball wide from good
position. ‘Hive were thrown a lifeline in the 28th minute when John Farquhar
made a complete hash of a simple take and the ball spilled to Cohn Munro who
tapped the ball into an empty net. This signalled a spell of pressure from
the home side but they could not capitalise on their superiority. With the
ref looking at his watch there was an almighty melee in the ‘Hive area but
eventually the ball was booted clear by Mark Galashan.
At the start of the second period Hugh Robertson exchanged a pass with Donny
Adam who brought out a good save from the ‘keeper but the ball fell for Hugh
Robertson who shot just wide. Culter then sent on new signing Derek Craigie
for Allan Youngson but it was the home side that almost equalised when a
thundering hit from Ross Burnett was brilliantly saved by John Farquhar.
Culter were beginning to get back into it and an Andy Sim curler squirted
just beyond the post. Gordon Farmer then replaced Ryan Stott but it was
Derek Craigie who almost scored but his vicious shot was deflected behind
for a corner. A few minutes later Any Sim was sent tumbling in the box but
Referee Craig Veitch waved play on whilst everyone else thought it was a
stonewaller. Culter almost grabbed a third in the 85th minute when a rasper
from Derek Craigie was fantastically saved by Mike Smith. A minute later
Fraser Strachan was sent for an early shower following a second yellow
