There was a
disappointing start to the New Year when Referee Roddy Cobb declared frozen
Crombie Park as unplayable after his morning inspection. Our Superleague match
due against Lewis United on Saturday 3 January 2009 was therefore postponed for
the second time. We were due to play them on Saturday 25 October 2008 but on
that occasion it was put off due to gale force winds.
10 Years Ago. Culter had a free date on Saturday 2 January 1999. Top of
our scoring table at that stage was Derek Craigie with 10 goals. It was
announced in that week’s Bulletin that our new Lottery was being launched on
Saturday 9 January 1999. It replaced our weekly Sweepstake which had been in
operation since the 1950s.
15 Years Ago. Our Premier Division match, Culter v Bon Accord, due to be
played on Saturday 8 January 1994 at Crombie Park was again postponed. The
overnight frost left our pitch frozen and it failed Referee J Paterson’s morning
inspection. We hadn’t had a game since 4 December 1993 due to
postponements/Festive Season dates. Alex Irvine had a sweepstake double — he was
outright winner of the £100 prize and for good measure had a £1 IOU keeping up a
remarkable run of luck as he had won the sweepstake £100 and a £1 IOU only three
weeks earlier!
20 Years Ago. Culter beat Crombie Sports 3—1 in the 1st Round of the
McLeman Cup at Crombie Park on Saturday 7 January 1989. Our scorers were Gary
Foote, Paul Thomson and Millar Kennedy whilst Stuart Devine netted for Crombie
Sports. Crombie Sports chose Bob Seivwright as our “Man of the Match”. The
Referee was A F Smith, Ellon and our line-up was as follows:R Seivwright, A
Raffell, N Bremner, M Bird, E Shearer, M Kennedy, A Fraser, P Thomson, A
Johnstone, M Craigmile, G Foote. Substitute: C Ferries.
25 Years Ago. On Saturday 31 December 1983 Culter beat Aboyne 2— 1 at
Crombie Park in an Amateur League Division 1 match. The Hogmanay Day weather was
really fine and Culter ended the year on a happy note. On target for Culter were
Arthur Reid and former Aboyne player Kenny Thompson whilst Stewart Walker scored
for Aboyne. The referee was Arthur H Maders and our team was:B Mime, R Kennedy,
B Russell, K Thompson, P George, R Westland, S Davidson, A Smith, A Reid, H
Reid, S Munson. Substitutes: A Johnstone and R Clark.
30 Years Ago. Culter had been playing home games at Culter School Pitch
and were in the throes
of a lengthy match postponement spell. We were due to play Pencaitland at home
on Saturday 6
January 1979 but it was postponed weekly until Saturday 3 March 1979 and after
all that we drew
1-1 thanks to an 81st minute equaliser from Peter George after a great piece of
work by Graham
Shand. The next week we lost the replay 0-2 with the highlight 5 minutes before
the end when
Pencaitland revealed their secret weapon — a male streaker frolicked across the
pitch!

Third Time. In last week’s Bulletin I stated that our Superleague match
against Lewis United due at
Crombie Park on Saturday 3 January 2009 was postponed for the second time. It
has been pointed out to
me, however, that it was in fact put off for the third time. In addition to our
Superleague postponement on
Saturday 25 October 2008 due to the gale force winds that day it was also
cancelled on Saturday 22
November 2008 because of our snow covered pitch. Last Saturday’s postponement
was due to Crombie
Park being frozen.
Birthday Boy. The sequence of Culter FC birthdays reaching ‘three score
years and ten” continues. After our Groundsmen George J Aitken and Gordon Laing
plus myself celebrated our 70th birthdays, advance congratulations go to our
loyal supporter and Crombie Shop salesman John K Ogston who joins us on Thursday
15 January 2009. John was a top goalkeeper — playing for Banks o Dee when they
won the Scottish / Junior Cup in 1957 then joining Aberdeen FC and he was a
Scotland Under 23 Cap P He was transferred to Liverpool FC John and Denis Law
were in the Powis School Team and they were both in the Aberdeen squad which won
the Scottish Primary Schools Cup in 1951. John has exchanged his goalkeeping
gloves for oven gloves John I
