Emirates Scottish Junior Cup 2 Round Culter 3 St Rochs 0 (at Crombie
Park, Culter) H-T 0-0
Scorers: Colin Craik 50, Allan Youngson 87, Martin Cooper 88
Culter cruised into the 3 round of the Scottish but left it late to consolidate
the win. The Deesiders looked to be in trouble early on when down to ten men
when Martin Shand was sent for an early bath for retaliation in the 12th minute.
Culter started well and were denied the lead in the 2nd minute when Rob Duff
headed off the line from a Martin Cooper effort. Minutes later Martin Shand was
sent packing when he foolishly retaliated following a tug on his jersey by a St.
Rochs player. The Deesiders then won a series of corners which culminated in
Cohn Craik blasting wide from decent position. Saints gradually got back into
the game but posed no real threat to the Culter goal but with 25 minutes gone
Culter upped the ante and Colin Craik hit a screamer just wide of the mark.
There was controversy soon after as one of the opposition coaches was shown a
red card for remarks made to the referee. Allan Youngson then tried his luck
from long range but his attempt went woefully wide before the opposition had
their first attempt on goal but Alan Mcintosh spilled the bail but recovered
before a Saints player could capitahse. Soon after Steve Martin tried to break
the deadlock but the Glaswegian’s shot from what looked like an offside position
flew harmlessly past. With half time rapidly approaching Hugh Robertson fed Dod
McBain and from the resultant corner Allan Youngson curled a shot well past the
goal. Half Time: 0 — 0.
With five minutes of the second period gone Culter went deservedly in front when
Allan Youngson combined with Richard Wyness to set up Colin Craik who blasted a
cracker past Jimmy Docherty and into the net. Adam Wilson then replaced the
struggling Dod McBain but it was sub Brain Henderson who almost got Saints back
into the game but he shot wildly over from inside the area. Richard Wyness then
cleverly held the bail up for Allan Youngson but once again he was wide of
target as Culter pushed to make the tie safe. The Deesiders then sent on Chris
Mountford for the hard working Richard Wyness but the visitors were down to ten
men when Garry Benett was shown to the pavilion for indecent remarks to the
referee. The visitors then lost a second official as their manager was shown a
straight red card for questioning the referee’s parentage. The Deesiders
deservedly went two up when Allan Youngson broke free and curled a brammer past
the ‘keeper and into the net off the post. A minute later Culter were coasting
when Allan Youngson sent in a deep corner and Martin Cooper leapt like a salmon
to head a peach low into the net.
