Superleague: Hermes I Culter 3 (at Lochside Park, Bridge of Don) H-T 1-0
Scorers:
Hermes: Chris Courage 13. Culter: Cohn Craik 47, Adam Wilson 75, Allan
Youngson 85
Saturday 14 November
2009. In a match dominated by the blustery wind the Deesiders came from
behind to secure all three points.
With the howling wind at their backs Hermes came out like a house on fire and
were unlucky when Ryan Sinclair tried his luck from range but his effort flashed
just wide. However Culter did have a chance a few minutes later when a Hugh
Robertson try went agonisingly wide of the mark before the home side took the
lead when Chris Courage was left unmarked in the box to fire home the opener.
Despite the aggressive conditions Culter were far from out of it and Chris
Ogboke saw his attempt fly over from an Allan Youngson pass. Allan Youngson was
then denied by Chris Irvine in the Hermes goal after the midfielder had raced
clear and Chris Mountford then rushed his shot from good position. Culter were
then hemmed in for a long periods as the Bridge of Don men used the gale to
their advantage but they could not find a way past the resolute Culter defence.
Just before the interval Chris Mountford almost equalised when he turned
delightfully in the box but his shot flew past the post. Half Time: 1 — 0.
Culter were right back in it with only two minutes of the second half gone when
Cohn Craik went on a surging run and finished with an accurate shot for what
must be a contender for goal of the season. The Deesiders looked to have gone in
front a few minutes later when Chris Ogboke netted but the goal was ruled out
for offside which bemused both home and away fans. Hermes were reduced to 10 men
in the 70th minute when Ryan Sinclair was shown a second yellow card for
petulantly kicking the ball away following the award of a dubious free kick to
Culter. The home side were left to rue that as Culter sneaked in front when Adam
Wilson was left all on his own at the back post and the rejuvenated midfielder
headed the ball home. Culter then sent on Martin Shand for Chris Mountford and
the substitute almost made it three but the chance was gone when Grant Campbell
put in a last gasp challenge. With the clock counting down Allan Youngson
secured the win when his in-swinging corner flew over the ‘keeper and straight
into the net.

Bathgate Bound.
Culter have drawn very formidable Scottish Junior Cup opponents Bathgate Thistle
who reached the 2006 Scottish Junior Cup Final, losing 2-1 to Auchinleck Talbot
at Rugby Park, Kilmarnock, in front of around 7,000 spectators. In 2008 season
the club reached the final again, this time defeating Cumnock Juniors 2-1. They
play in the SJFA’s East Region Superleague. They were formed in 1937 and play at
Creamery Park, which has room for 2,437 spectators. Their home shirts are blue
with a white trim and their away shirts are black with a white trim. We
played Bathgate Thistle at Creamery Park in the 4th Round of the Scottish Junior
Cup on 12 January 2002 losing 2-1. Neil McRitchie put us ahead in the 2nd minute
but Bathgate equalised in 19 minutes. We were awarded a penalty midway through
the 2 half but the ‘keeper tipped McRitchie’s spot kick over the bar. Culter
paid dearly for the miss in 85 minutes when ‘keeper Buckley failed to gather a
cross and it landed in front of substitute Hayton who scored.
Dinner Details.
Our 24th Celebrity Dinner at the Menzies Dyce Aberdeen Airport Hotel on Friday
13 November 2009 was again a very successful fund raiser for us. The event was
attended by 233 Gentlemen, our best attendance since 2001, quite surprising
considering the present financial climate. Full details of the event will be
published later.
